Props are important to be added into scenes for characters to bond and attach to while viewing films, opening title sequences trailers and other such things. Some props create a homely feeling and others create suspicion what is why they're added, to have a variety of emotions, reactions and results out of the audience and actors.
Horror props are often in their films cursed, with a twist or fooling characters. Mostly props are seen to also be a part of pain as in that's what the genre of represents. Our group decided to have the main character to be tied up in a room without many props so the person would be isolated and go insane without any explanation needed.

Masks are added to horror films because they tend to be a revolving plot point that unknowable situations and suspicion rotate around. Mostly for the audience it'll create the mystery needed to arise their suspicion of who is behind the mask; keeping the audience engaged with the film. For instance, films such as Scream and Saw have their killers wear masks (the characters of Ghostface and Jigsaw in their films; respectively) to keep the audience in suspense as the film continues until the final unmasking at the end.
